Writers oppose categorisation of books

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Nov. 10. Sixteen prominent Kannada writers have written to the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, against the way the Minister of State for Public Libraries and Adult Education, Babu Rao Chavan, is going about to categorise books into A, B, C, and D based on their content. In a letter to the Chief Minister, they questioned Mr. Chavan's competence to do so. They had also protested against the way he is conducting the affairs of the Department of Public Libraries. They wanted the Chief Minister to revive the purchase of Kannada books by the public libraries, which had been suspended for the past 11 months, and stop the minister's move to appoint committees of officials in all the districts to decide on the purchase. The Minister had no confidence in the committee set up by the Government.

The signatories to the letter are G.S. Shivarudrappa, Channaveera Kanavi, Chandrashekara Kambara, M. Chidanandamurthy, Ham. Pa. Nagarajaiah, M.H. Krishnaiah, S.V. Srinivasa Rao, G. Narayana, Vyasaraya Ballal, H.S. Raghavendra Rao, N.S. Lakshminarayana Bhatta, L.S. Seshagiri Rao, Ramachandra Sharma, C. Srinivasaraju, Panditaradhya, and G.P. Basavaraju.
