Call for efforts to strengthen third front to fight communalism

Bangalore Nov. 10. Speakers at a national seminar on "Secularism, agriculture-industrial crisis, and power reforms" today called for efforts to strengthen the third front opposed to the BJP and the Congress to fight against communalism and the policy of globalisation.

One of them, the State CPI(M) Secretary, C.N. Nagaraj, said the unity of the country lay in secularism, but the BJP-dominated NDA government was working against this. The Congress had failed to contain this.

Mr. Nagaraj regretted that the Congress, which was responsible for adopting the policy of globalisation and liberalisation, was still not sorry for the "blunder" it had committed.

The Secretary General of the JD(S) State unit, C. Narayanaswamy, said the need for secularism was greater today than ever before with forces which had communalism as a hidden agenda starting to implement it openly and boldly.

Mr. Siddanagowda Patil, the CPI State Secretary warned of danger to the State in the next ten years, as the BJP, which could not find a base in other southern Statesm was targeting Karnataka.

Unless the message of secularism was taken to the villages, it would be difficult to fight the communal forces.

There was need for the Left to act rather than react as it had been doing all along, he said.

A trade union leader, Prakash, presided over the valedictory session of the two-day seminar organised by the Save India Committee.
