Scholars urged to develop Brown Memorial Library

CUDDAPAH Nov. 10. The Vice-Chancellor of Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, G. Venkata Subrahmanyam, on Sunday called upon scholars to strive to develop the C.P. Brown Memorial Library into a research centre.

Speaking as the chief guest at Brown's 204th birth anniversary celebrations organised by the Brown Memorial Trust, he described Charles Phillip Brown as an ardent fan of Telugu language, although he was a Britisher. Assuring the university's cooperation, he advised the organisers to chalk out an action plan to develop the library into an autonomous body by taking up programmes to promote Telugu, as the language lacked adequate patronage.

The Rajya Sabha member, C. Narayana Reddy, announced a contribution of Rs. 10 lakhs for constructing a meeting hall and reading room in Brown library, he said. He wanted the library to develop into a human resource centre by raising funds from MPs from all over the State. He also sought setting up of computers to train unemployed youth. Stating that Brown library was recognised as a distance education centre of Potti Sriramulu University, he assured to contribute books published by the university.

The Brown Library president, G. Krishnamurthy, who presided, the secretary, J. Hanumath Sastry, and litterateurs, Ravuri Bharadwaja, and Mallemala Venugopala Reddy, wanted spread of Telugu culture among students. They urged Prof. Subrahmanyam to extend assistance for development of the library into a literary centre.

The correspondent of Zion College of Physical Education, K. Rajarathnam Isaac, and special invitees, Subrahmanyam and S. Sirajuddin, the office-bearers of the library committee, J. C. Subbaiah, M. Janakiram, Katta Narasimhulu, Ramasubba Reddy, the retired professor, S. Gangappa, the librarian of Telugu University, M. Sankar Reddy and M. Krishnamurthy Rao, also participated.
