According to an estimate by the Agriculture Department, sowing was expected to be taken up in 2.27 lakh hectares of land during the kharif season. However, only 1.84 lakh hectares could be covered. The lack of moisture cut down the yield. Owing to the scanty rainfall, the storage in the tanks depleted. Hence the extent of land under paddy cultivation came down. According to the statistics provided by the department, the paddy yield would be low compared to that of last year. However, the delayed rains in October have brought cheers to ragi and avare growers. The department targeted growing of paddy in 2,100 hectares of land, but sowing was taken up only in 1,971 hectares. The target for ragi was 36,170 hectares, but sowing was taken up only in 28,060 hectares. The case of jowar was different. Farmers grew the crop in 4,360 hectares, although the target was only 2,600 hectares.
