Mayor pulls up staff for poor sanitation

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Sept. 6. Squalor all around was what the Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, got to see in the Gowliguda area on an overcast Friday morning. Reeking garbage, overflowing nala and a litany of complaints kept the Mayor busy. He warned the MCH officials of stringent action if the ``mess was not cleaned immediately.''

Mr. Reddy, who visited the Goshamahal municipal division, a predominantly residential area located amid a maze of business establishments, asked officials to ensure that the sanitation works were taken up on a regular basis. "Otherwise, we will have to confront these heaps of garbage wherever we go. And with them, furious residents too,'' he chided them.

At Sanjeeviaah Nagar slum, residents requested streetlights and speedy completion of repair works on a local community hall which was in a dilapidated condition. In nearby Gowliguda junction area, the Mayor wanted suggestions from residents on construction of a reading hall in place of an unused community toilet. "Do you want the community toilet to continue or go,'' he asked. He also walked into a nearby Irani hotel and pulled up its owner for the unhygienic conditions there.

The Mayor was accompanied by the local MLA, Premsingh Rathod, the Deputy Mayor, Subhashchanderji, and senior officials of the Corporation.
