Civic bodies told to repay loans

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA SEPT. 6. The Government will support municipal corporations and municipalities which repay loans they have taken from institutions like HUDCO for development. The Government which is providing counter-guarantee to civic bodies will be put in a difficult position if they do not repay loans and release of grants to them will be stopped, according to the Municipal Administration Minister, N.Md. Farooq.

The Minister was inaugurating the office complex in the newly-built Kaleswara Rao general market here on Friday. He said several municipalities which were not repaying loans were demanding the Government for grants. Making an oblique reference to the VMC, the Minister said a loan was taken to develop colonies for weaker sections. The municipalities had no business to do it as it was the responsibility of the Government to develop colonies for the down-trodden.

The Minister justified the hike in water charges. He said the VMC should supply water on a no-profit, no-loss basis. Some corporations were able to make a profit on distribution of water, but that was not the case with Vijayawada.

The Revenue Minister, P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, spoke. The Agriculture Minister, Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao, said platforms would be arranged for vegetable vendors in special sheds.

The complex was constructed at a cost of Rs. 5.6 crores.
