The President made this observation at Torni village in Khandwa district where he was on a short visit to have a first-hand glimpse of the work done under the ambitious Watershed Mission programme. Dr. Kalam was accompanied by the State Governor, Bhai Mahavir, and the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh. Dr. Kalam told the villagers that they should back their dreams with hard work and emphasised that this should be the formula for their success. After inspecting the water-recharging works, he was listening to the immediate problems of the Torni villagers. Responding to a young boy's anxiety over the lack of a proper road in his village, the President recommended that a road be provided and the Chief Minister promptly gave instructions to immediately construct one. Another boy raised the issue of poverty and unemployment the two main problems confronting his village. The President advised that 15 to 20 villages should come together and form a group. These villages should be inter-linked with a road and communication network and a well-knit market can be developed for the villagers to sell or purchase produce. With the growth of trade and commerce at the village level, the urban people will go to the villages to purchase goods and this will lead to prosperity in the countryside, he added. The President lauded the Watershed Mission and said that what had been achieved in Madhya Pradesh could be implemented all over the country. Later this afternoon, the President returned to New Delhi by a special Indian Air Force plane. The Chief Minister also left for Delhi along with him.
