Bill to set up National Judicial Commission soon

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI Sept. 6. The Union Law Minister, Jana Krishnamurthi, said today that the Government would try to evolve a consensus and introduce a bill in the winter session of Parliament for setting up a National Judicial Commission, which would be empowered to appoint judges to the High Court and the Supreme Court.

Inaugurating a two-day national conference on "Legal and Judicial Reforms," organised by the Bar Association of India and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Krishnamurthi said the Constitution Review Commission, concerned over the inordinate delay in appointments to the higher judiciary, had recommended the setting up of the NJC.

As on July 1, there were 141 vacancies for High Court judges and recommendations had come only for 74 posts.

There was an enormous delay in completing the process and only the NJC could ensure that the vacancies were filled up expeditiously.
