Appointment orders will be issued to 380 wardens for BCM hostels and 613 wardens for hostels run by the Social Welfare Department by September end. Disclosing this to presspersons here on Friday, the Joint Director (Administration), Social Welfare Department, M.V. Thimmaiah, said these appointments did not include those made against backlog vacancies. The Social Welfare Department had filled 15 backlog vacancies and the BCM Department had cleared 25 vacant posts, including those of typists and drivers. He said the Government had directed the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC) to supply uniforms to students before Dasara holidays. Stating that the corporation should have supplied uniforms by August 15, he said the department extended the deadline because of work pressure on the former. The BCM Department had supplied one set of uniforms to students. Mr. Thimmaiah said the Ministry had directed the officials to inspect and monitor the progress of various schemes being implemented by the two departments. Some officials of these departments in Koppal District were suspended for their failure to implement the schemes. He visited the hostels run by the two departments here, and also listened to the grievances of beneficiaries of schemes offered by the SC/ST Development Corporation and the BCM Development Corporation. He visited Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Pre-Matric Hostel in Hassan and the one at Bidaradahalli run by the Social Welfare Department. At the Ambedkar hostel, Mr. Thimmaiah took the officials to task for locking up bathrooms and for not providing hot water to students for bathing. The Social Welfare Officer, S.N.Govinda Gowda, said the bathrooms were being repaired by the Karnataka Land Army Corporation. Stating that the grant for beds, blankets, and other items to be given to students at the hostel was fixed 30 years ago, he said there was a proposal to enhance it to Rs. 500 per student. When the authorities informed Mr. Thimmaiah that there were 150 students in the hostel, he directed them to hire an additional English teacher to teach seventh standard students. He also directed the hostel supervisor to provide volleyballs and footballs to the students. He asked the students whether the hostel authorities were providing them the prescribed items and good food. The students replied in the affirmative. At the Bidaradahalli hostel, Mr. Thimmaiah directed Mr. Gowda to ensure that the solar panels were repaired at the earliest, and to provide hot water and good food to students. When the Hassan Taluk Social Welfare Officer, L. Shivalinge Gowda, said that it was not possible to provide vegetable curry with meals to the students in the allocated budget, Mr. Thimmaiah asked him to make the best use of the budget. M.G.Shankerlinge Gowda, District BCM Officer, said the Government had released Rs. 11 lakh and Rs. 14 lakh for maintenance of hostels run by the two departments in the district. Officials from Backward Classes and Minorities and SC/ST Development corporations were present.
