Leaders of the UDF organisations told reporters here yesterday that the elections had degenerated into a farce as a result of a conspiracy to politicise Matsyafed and convert it into an LDF outfit. They said about 432 societies set up during the LDF regime were only paper organisations. These societies were responsible for financial irregularities to the tune of crores of rupees, which had plunged Matsyafed into a crisis. The UDF leaders said many LDF societies owing huge amounts as arrears had been included in the voters' list. They said the UDF Government had disbanded the governing committee and appointed an administrative committee with the aim of weeding out the paper organisations and retaining the affiliation of genuine societies. But, this direction was thrown to the winds by Matsyafed officials working in tandem with LDF leaders, they alleged. The leaders urged the Government to take stern action against the guilty officials.
