This Day That Age
Mr. Warwick F. Chipman, the retiring High Commissioner for Canada in India, in a farewell message to the people of India, on September 5 said: "The time has come when I must leave India and say farewell. I do so with the keenest regret, after three years of absorbing interest and treasured experience. These three years have witnessed India's transformation into a unified Republic, the carving out of the Constitution, the inauguration of the Five-Year Plan, the peaceful completion of the most prodigious democratic election in history, the steady process of the first Parliament. All of this accomplishment of re-shaping, re-integrating and re-planning political and economic in the face of immense difficulties, has been profoundly impressive. It is a satisfaction to know that during this time Canada in some degree has been able to help through the Colombo Plan in the furtherance of your own projects of constructive development. I hope that in the current year that help can be expressed in the most serviceable form. "But, it is not of politics and economics especially that I wish to speak in saying goodbye. I have become deeply attached to this country and its people. I have met with an unfailing kindness that has made my stay a very happy one. I have gained precious and unforgettable friendships. I have encountered strong, wise and beautiful minds and something of the stores from which they got strength, wisdom and beauty. For all this, I want to give my thanks."
