Strive for development, Mayor tells corporators

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Aug. 9. It is only people who make the State `swarna Andhra Pradesh' by deciding themselves what needs to be done for their welfare and not the elected representatives or officials, observed the Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, here on Friday.

Addressing the Tarnaka ward sabha organised by the Standing Committee of Tarnaka Residents' Welfare Association, he called upon the MCH corporators to utilise the four-and-half years left of their term for development of the twin cities. Corporators should put to use their resources and powers for fulfilling the aspirations of people, the Mayor said.

He assured the gathering that the views expressed by the speakers at the sabha would be kept in view while finding solutions to the problems of Tarnaka.

Referring to the underground drainage needs of the area, which was the most felt-need of the residents in the survey conducted by the Associations, the Mayor stated that huge funds were required for putting up plants to treat sewerage.

Jayaprakash Narayan, national coordinator of Lok Satta, felt that real development would take place and their welfare become meaningful when people were empowered to take decisions for finding solutions to their problems. He described the sabha a model experiment which would go a long way in meeting people's needs.

Lata, Tarnaka corporator, told the sabha that the monthly meetings of the standing committee had helped her to arrive at decision for resolving people's problems. She declared her resolve to make Tarnaka a model ward. She said the main felt need of the area, underground drainage, was engaging the attention of the administration.

Rao Chelakani, association president, chaired the sabha. He expressed displeasure that the Ministers -- Bandaru Dattatreya and Srinivas Yadav— the Collector, Rajeshwar Tiwari, the MCH commissioner, Chitra Ramchandran, MD HMWSSB, M.G. Gopal, had failed to turn up.
