City residents cautioned against burglars

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 9. The City Police have urged householders who lock their houses and leave for Onam vacation to exercise certain precautions against burglars.Jewellery and other valuable articles should be kept in a secure place. All doors inside the house should be bolted and windows fastened without fail. The door of the staircase room, if any, should also be closed. The doors leading out of the house should be padlocked as an additional precaution. Telephone answering machines should be disconnected and the phone receiver kept off the hook.It should be ensured that milk packets and newspapers are not delivered at the house in the absence of the householder. Implements such as pick-axes and crowbars should not be stored outside the house. The householder should inform trustworthy neighbours of his absence and if possible, install a burglar-alarm in the house. If the house is situated in a housing colony, the services of a security guard should be used. Alternatively, the residents themselves can patrol the colony after getting in touch with the Sub Inspector of the local police station. The householder should inform the local police station about the period of his absence. If vehicles are left behind, very little fuel should be left in the fuel tanks. The spark plug and battery should also be removed and kept in a secure place.
