DD begins digital terrestrial transmission

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI Aug. 9. The Chennai Kendra of Doordarshan today started telecasting programmes using digital terrestrial TV transmitters, becoming a trendsetter in the introduction of set-top boxes in the city. Viewers can access programmes through set-top boxes, which cost about Rs. 5,000 and can even view channels while travelling.

Based on a new digital broadcasting technology, five DD channels are multiplexed by digital compression on `Coded Frequency Division Multiplex' technology and broadcast by a single carrier. The test transmission was started today.
