Wipro to support Deepan, Priyadarshini

CHENNAI AUG. 9. Wipro, India's IT major which has been providing the support system for many promising chess players over the last couple of years, has taken Tamil Nadu's Deepan Chakkravarthy and M. Priyadarshini under its fold. This was announced by Mr. Vijay Gupta, vice-president, Brand and Communication, Wipro Limited, at a press meet here on Friday.

While presenting the two with computer notebooks, Mr. Gupta said that Wipro will be supporting the two Madurai-based players with software, specialised coaching under Russian Evegeny Vladimirov at a camp in Bangalore and financial support to the tune of Rs. four lakhs each for the contract period of one year, to enable them to play in tournaments abroad, among other things.

Wipro is currently supporting seven players, including these two 15-year-olds. The others are GM P. Harikrishna (Andhra), Aarthie Ramaswamy (TN), Eesha Karvade (Pune), Rahul Sangma (Bihar) and D. Harika (AP). The company's budget for chess this year is Rs. one crore and its vision is to enable the country produce 25 Grandmasters in the next five years.

Both Deepan and Priyadarshini are presently coached by the Bangalore-based IM Raja Ravi Shekhar. The two youngsters remembered all those who helped them along the way and said they would live up to the faith placed by Wipro.
