He made his first State-level appearance in 1994 winning silver and bronze medals, which gave him a chance to participate in the 11th Sub-junior National Aquatic Championship in Mumbai. From then on, it has been no looking back for Ashwin as his medal tally increased from year to year. Today, even as he is undergoing training at Talkatora in Delhi for the international meet in China, his supporters are pining hopes on him to win an international medal. Last time, Ashwin missed an international bronze medal by a whisker (0.6 fractions of a second) in the 14th Asia Pacific Swimming and Diving Championship at Kaohsiung in Taiwan in 2000. But that international outing has added to Ashwin's experience. Ashwin's parents, who were elated at their son's selection to the national team, told The Hindu that Ashwin always had a penchant for aquatics. B.P.Harish Kumar, Ashwin's father, was happy about the disposition of his son towards extensive training and physical fitness. According to him, his son used to practise for up to eight hours, which stood him in good stead.
