Fire service personnel plan stir

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Aug. 9. The Association of the Fire Service staff in Pondicherry has planned to stage a series of agitations to focus their problems.

Addressing presspersons here today, R.Ramu president and T.Ganesan secretary of the Association said that the charter of demands urging the authorities to introduce wage pattern for the staff on par with the one prevailing for their counterparts in New Delhi would be reiterated now. Despite repeated representations, nothing had been done so far.

There is no specific manual for fire service department in Pondicherry. The Tamil Nadu manual had been adopted. The staff now attended work with badges containing the demands.

The fire service had been brought under plan category after much struggle and the pay scales fixed for the staff was less than what their counteraparts were getting in Delhi. The strength of the fire service personell here was only around 200. The police department had been shown parity in wages while the fire service personnel were discriminated against, they alleged. The staff would stage a dharna in front of the office of the Divisional Fire Officer on August 12 which would be subsequently followed by a procession by the personnel in uniform to the Assembly premises to present petitions to the authorities.

The other demands of the staff are hike in washing allowance, promotion for the drivers in the department, payment of risk allowance and wireless facility. Anandharajan, a functionary of the Confederation of the government employees Associations said that though the Joint Consultative Machinery had been approached for settlement of the problems of the staff, nothing had been done.
