A resolution adopted on Wednesday at a Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, highlighted the serious situation in Karaikal. Later, briefing newspersons, Mr. Rangasamy said he had written to the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister on the problem faced by farmers of the region. Cauvery water was not available for Karaikal and this had resulted in a major decline in acreage under kuruvai and a sebtack in samba . The Administration required the assistance so that the Agriculture, PWD and Local Administration Departments could take up rehabilitation works to mitigate the sufferings of the ryots. The Cabinet also approved the Subramanian Committee report identifying the sections under the Scheduled Tribes in Pondicherry. The report would be forwarded to the Centre for its nod and for extension of benefits under various schemes to the STs residing here.
