Coming at a time when the spectre of drought was looming large over the State, the rains augur well for the agriculture operations and help relieve drinking water and fodder shortage. Inflows into Srisailam reservoir are still modest, but heavy rain in the catchment of the Godavari have led to filling-up of a number of tanks and irrigation projects in Khammam district. Kaleswaram, the temple town on the Godavari in Karimnagar district, is cut off from the rest of the district. Rain also played havoc causing breaches to roads and house collapses in the district. Sriramsagar project also received heavy inflows. Reports from Khammam said Venkatapuram received the highest rainfall of 20 cm, Wajedu and Peruru 19 and 18.8 in the past 24 hours. Rainfall was heavy in coastal and some Telangana districts, insufficient in Rayalaseema and a few Telangana districts. The State has so far received 209 mm against normal of 333 mm for the period. The Godavari is rising steadily at Bhadrachalam touching 24.3 ft this noon and set to cross 35 ft by late night. Its tributary, Taliperu, is in spate. Taliperu project in Khammam district was brimming and excess water was being discharged. Several other projects received good inflows. Rains continued to batter the twin cities for the third day on Friday.
