Assam accuses Centre of ignoring flood situation

By Our Special Correspondent

GUWAHATI Aug. 9. The Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, accused the Centre of not bothering to send any team to assess flood damages here on Thursday. ``The Centre is not taking the State's flood problem seriously.'' Mr. Gogoi said there had been a definite improvement in the flood situation in the State and the Government had provided adequate relief, including medicines and cattle feed.

While preliminary estimates have put the losses at Rs. 2000 crores, the final figures will be known only by the month-end.

Mr. Gogoi said 30 deaths had been reported so far, 56 lakh people in 19 districts had been affected and eight lakh hectares of cropped area damaged.
