Softbrands establishes centre in Bangalore

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Aug. 9. Softbrands Manufacturing, the U.S.-based global supplier of enterprise-wide applications software, launched its operations here on Thursday.

The development and implementation centre will support the Fourth Shift ERP (enterprise resource planning) application.

"Bangalore has more readily available resources in terms of software engineering and talent pool compared to China. Cost effectiveness is almost the same in India and China," Randy Tofteland, President, Softbrands Manufacturing, said.

The centre will offer implementation and localisation of Fourth Shift for Indian use. Mid-sized manufacturing units operating in the Indian subcontinent, and SAARC countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Burma would be targeted by Softbrands for marketing Fourth Shift.

Softbrands acquired the ERP product after a takeover of the Fourth Shift Division of Systems Plus in May. The acquisition forms part of Softbrands growth strategy. "We are looking at growth both internally and through acquisitions," Mr. Tofteland said.

Softbrands is employing 80 professionals at its Bangalore centre. The company plans to ramp up the team to 100 by the year-end. While there are 25 projects for implementation of the ERP product, the company expects to gain five more implementation sites (customers) by December.

Internet portal

Wipro Infotech has successfully completed the implementation of an Internet portal for Marico. The portal integrates the distribution chain and field sales team of the FMCG Company. The system works like a virtual office with the integration of the company's SAP R/3 system and dealer software with the portal.

The solution was built on a Microsoft ASP platform with back-end integration to SAP r5/3, advanced planning and optimisation and business intelligence and warehousing.
