Minister clarifies on medium of instruction

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Aug. 9. The Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education, B.K. Chandrashekar, today clarified that he had only favoured a discussion on whether Kannada or the mother tongue should be the medium of instruction up to 10th standard.

In a statement, Prof. Chandrashekar referred to reports in a section of the Press on the issue of medium of instruction and said that according to the State's policy on the medium of instruction, only mother tongue or Kannada was compulsory from standards one to five.

He said students had to study an additional language other than Kannada or mother tongue as second language from the sixth standard. They could also change the medium of instruction from the sixth standard.

Making it clear that he was committed to the policy, Prof. Chandrashekar said neither he nor the Government had sought any discussion on it. There was no confusion about its implementation.

Referring to the views of the Kannada Development Authority that standard one to seven constituted the primary education sector, he said this related to its definition of primary education.
