Retention of students more important: Collector

By Our Staff Reporter

Rajahmundry Aug. 9. The Collector, K.S. Jawahar Reddy, on Friday said that while enrolling dropouts and other categories of children in schools during `Chaduvula Panduga', it was also important to see that they continued in schools. In fact, the latter was more difficult a job, he said. Dr. Jawahar Reddy was the chief guest at the `Chaduvula Panduga' programme organised by the Municipal Corporation at the Sri Venkateswara Kalakendram here. The Mayor, M.S. Chakravarthy presided over the meeting.

The Collector pointed out that for every one lakh children enrolled, the retention was about 67,000 up to class VII. But the number of students who appeared for the 10th examination was only 42,000 last year, which meant the retention on the whole was mere 42 per cent. This should be increased gradually, he said.

There are three categories of children, those who were never enrolled in schools, dropouts and children who were regularly irregular in their attendance. All the three categories should be enrolled and retained. In East Godavsari district, there were about 9.40 lakh children in the age group of 5 and 14, of whom more than nine lakhs had been enrolled. Of the remaining 40,000, as many as 13,000 were enrolled last week during `Chaduvula Panduga' programme.

The Mayor pointed to the lack of facilities like classrooms and sought the help of the Collector to solve this problem. "We need at least 100 classrooms," he said.

The Commissioner, T.S.R. Anjaneyulu, urged the teachers in various schools to adopt children enrolled under the `Chaduvula Panduga' scheme. Teachers should monitor on a daily basis and if any enrolled child failed to attend school, the teacher should find out the reason and see that the child continued his or her studies. The Sub-Collector, Suresh Kumar, the DEO, Venkateswara Sarma, the Child Labour Project Officer, Buchiraju, and others participated.
