Rice to be distributed to school children

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM Aug. 9. The Minister for Civil Supplies, G. Karthikeyan, said here today that 28 lakh school children in the State would be given an Onam gift of 5 kilograms of rice each. The rice would be distributed to the students through their respective schools before Onam.

At a press conference here today, he said in addition to the Metro Onam Fairs of the Civil Supplies Corporation already functioning at the five cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thirssur and Kozhikode in the State from August 2, Onam fairs would be opened at all the remaining district headquarters on August 12.

On August 16, Onam markets would be opened at all the remaining taluk and municipal headquarters plus fair price stalls in association with the cooperative societies of all panchayats. The Minister said that the sales made through such stalls would be at prices that stood at 40 per cent lower than the open market prices on essential commodities. The move is to maintain price control during the Onam season.
