Extortionists arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI AUG. 1. Two persons, alleged to be involved in over 20 cases of extortion and robbery, were nabbed following a brief exchange of fire at Sector-19 Dwarka in South-West Delhi, today. No one was reportedly injured in the cross-firing.

The accused, Hari Kishore and Deepak, are allegedly members of the Krishan Billu gang, which is active in the South, South-West and West Delhi. The police said Hari Kishore became the kingpin of the gang after its leader, Krishan Billu, was arrested and sent to jail.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, South-West Delhi, Tajender Luthra, the police received information that Hari Kishore would pass by Dwarka today. A trap was laid and around 6 p.m., the police team saw Hari Kishore coming on a motorcycle, along with his accomplice, and asked him to stop.

However, the duo opened fire at the police party. The police fired at them in retaliation and finally overpowered the two.

During interrogation, Hari Kishore revealed that he had come to the Dwarka area in search of a place from where he could operate the gang. Hari Kishore confessed to his involvement in several cases of extortion and robbery and told the police that he used to commit crime on the direction of his gang leader, Krishan Billu, who is in jail.

The police said the gang had created terror in the market areas at Uttam Nagar, Ambedker Nagar, Dabri and other places. They used to extort money from shopkeepers. Their real motive was however to capture the cable market in the area by threatening cable operators.

``They used to threaten cable operators to hand over their business to them.'' The reason behind this, the accused revealed, was easy and stable money from the business.

The police said they had received several such complaints in the recent past. Considering the imminent threat from gang members, the South-Delhi police decided to issue arms licenses to those targeted by the gang, for self-protection.

The police said some more arrests were possible in the case at the instance of the arrested gang members.
