Soorya Silver Jubilee fete from Sept. 21

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 1. Noted 25 stalwarts of Indian cinema will participate in the inaugural ceremony of the 31-day India Festival that will kick off the year-long Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Soorya Stage and Film Society at the Tagore Theatre here on September 21.

The inaugural ceremony will be followed by the world premiere of Jayaraj's Hindi film `Bheebatsa', the chief coordinator of the festival, Soorya Krishnamoorthy, told a press conference here today.

As many as 50 films will be screened in the film festival and Indian Panorama Festival that will follow. Under the nostalgia section, `Mother India', `Awara', `Taxi Driver', `Taj Mahal', `Pakeeza' and `Mugal-e-Azam' figure among the films to be screened.

Over 40 painters and sculptures from Kerala and folk painters from Orissa and Bihar will participate in the Artists Village to be set up at the Tagore Theatre from September 22 to 30, Mr. Krishnamoorthy said.

The dance and music festival will commence with the Carnatic vocal of K. J. Jesudas on October 1. Bharatanatyam by Alarmel Valli, Padma Subrahmaniam and Malavika Sarukkai; Mohiniyattom by Smitha Rajan and Carnatic vocal by Nithyasree Mahadevan and M. Jayachandran, and Hindustani-Carnatic Jugalbandhi by Ramesh Narayan and Rajkumar Bharathi will be the highlights of the 10-day dance and song festival.

The 10-day theatre festival will be kicked off with the staging of Kavalam Naryanan Panicker's `Theyam Theyam' at the VJT Hall on October 11.

The Silver Jubilee gift of Soorya will be `Parmapara'--a session of classical music and dance by the disciples of renowned gurus--from November 14, the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru. To be staged at the House Russian Culture, the programmes have been organised by Soorya in association with the House of Russian Culture.

The Guru Pooja will be accorded to the noted circus artiste, M. Kumaran, on October 21, the last day of the India Festival. The 31-day festival has been dedicated to artistes who had associated with Soorya during the last 25 years, Mr. Krishnamoorthy added. s.
