Brazil beats Angola in thriller

ISTANBUL AUG. 1. European champion Yugoslavia beat Algeria 99-68 while Turkey defeated China 78-65 as the Efes Pilsen Istanbul World Cup basketball tournament got underway on Wednesday.

In the other two games, Brazil overcame Angola 77-72 in overtime and Canada toppled Bulgaria 97-72.

In a nail-biting opener, Brazil and Angola were tied at 70 at the end of four quarters. But Brazil dominated the two-minute extra-time period to beat the African champion 77-72 in the tournament's first match. The game's top scorer was Brazil's Guilherme Giovanno with 21 points.

Yugoslavia then thrashed Algeria by a 31-point margin at the Abdi Ipekci stadium though Algeria's Amine Benramdane scored 25 points.

Turkey held a comfortable lead — at times more than 20 points — against China in the first half, but China came back. However, in the end, the Turks, who placed second at last year's European championships, defeated the Asian champion 78-65.

Canada also held the upperhand throughout its encounter against Bulgaria to win by a 25-point margin.

Eight national teams are competing in this maiden tournament, which will run till August 4. The tournament is expected to provide an important preparation ahead of the World championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, from Aug. 28 to Sept. 9.
