I-T investigation director shifted

By T.S. Shankar

CHENNAI Aug. 1. The recent crackdown on film stars and a financier may have sent shivers in the Kollywood, but, in the ``Year of Seizures, Raids, and Surveys'' announced by the Union Finance Ministry, the Director of Income Tax (Investigation), A. Selvaraj, who authorised personnel to search the residences of Ajith, Prasanth, and Jayaram, and R.B. Chowdhry, has been transferred and posted as Commissioner of Central Information Branch here.

The transfer has come as a rude shock to other officials in the department as Mr. Selvaraj took charge as the Director of Investigation only a year ago. It has once again brought to focus the thin edge, which officers dealing with ``sensitive cases'' tread. And in this case, the transfer orders came presumably bowing to ``political pressure'' from Tamil Nadu following representations from the film fraternity.

Mr. Selvaraj will be replaced by G. Muthuramakrishnan, IT Commissioner (Central-II), Chennai.

In another interesting development, P.K. Vijayakumar, currently Commissoner of Appeals, has been posted Commissioner Central (II), and will be looking into the cases of the AIADMK general secretary, Jayalalithaa.
