Kumar (25), a native of Kaggalipura, near Bannur, died at the hospital on Wednesday evening. An employee of a seed company in Bangalore, he had been booked under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code by the Bannur police, who said he was involved in a group clash. He was brought to the Mysore jail after a court in T. Narasipura had remanded him in judicial custody. The shifting of another inmate of Mysore Jail to NIMHANS on Tuesday midnight led to speculation that Kumar may have succumbed to injuries suffered in a fight inside the jail. Kumar's father, Nanje Gowda, told presspersons that his son had died under mysterious circumstances, and that an inquiry should be conducted by the authorities.
`Apprehensions about safety'
Mr. Gowda said Kumar had expressed apprehensions about his safety in the jail premises. "My son pleaded that he be released on bail soon, since he felt he was not safe inside the jail," Mr. Gowda said. He said his son had told him that he was being harassed in the jail. He alleged that his son was attacked inside the jail premises by other inmates, and that he had been admitted to hospital for treatment.
It was the jail authorities who intervened in the scuffle and brought Kumar to the hospital, he added. It is learnt that Kumar, who got married 18 months ago, has a three-month old infant. His wife, Shakuntala, was present at the mortuary to receive the body after post-mortem examination. Senior police officials including the Superintendent of Police, K.H. Srinivasan, and the Additional Superintendent of Police, Phanindra Singh, visited the hospital to pacify the agitated villagers.
Allegations denied
The Superintendent of Mysore Central Jail, Vishwanathaiah, refuted the allegations made by Mr. Nanje Gowda, and said Kumar was admitted to the K.R. Hospital on Wednesday after he complained of pain in his legs. He said Kumar had been to K.R. Hospital on July 26, 27, 29 and 30 for treatment in the Orthopaedic Department. It was on doctors' advice that he was admitted to the hospital for treatment, Mr. Vishwanathaiah added. He said the resident doctors at the jail had treated him for pain in his legs between July 20 and July 26. They referred the case to the K.R. Hospital as Kumar did not respond to the treatment. On whether the death could have been caused by assault by police before he was brought to jail, Mr. Vishwanathaiah said Kumar had not informed the jail authorities of any such assault. The jail inmate who was sent to NIMHANS on Tuesday sustained head injuries when another prisoner attacked him with a steel bucket. It is learnt that Siddanaik, an inmate of Dhyanakendra run by Brahmakumaris inside the jail premises, attacked Chinnaraju, causing severe injuries. Mr. Vishwanathaiah said Siddanaik, who was mentally unstable, had been meditating at the Dhyanakendra for the past eight months, and he had a good relationship with Chinnaraju. Siddanaik is facing trial for the murder of his father two years ago. Chinnarajau has been lodged in jail on charges of dacoity. Both cases were registered by the Mandi police.
