Backlog vacancies: Notices served on 40 bodies

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Aug. 1. The Government, in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, reiterated its commitment to fill all backlog vacancies for SCs and STs before the end of December this year.

The reiteration by the Social Welfare Minister, A. Krishnappa, on behalf of the Government came during replies to supplementaries on a question from B. Somashekar (JD-U) on the number of backlog vacancies for SCs and STs identified in departments, universities, boards, and corporations.

Mr. Krishnappa said a circular had been issued last month for the strict implementation of the decision to fill backlog vacancies, and notices had been served on 40 establishments, including the Police Department, Directorate of Collegiate Education, and the Lokayukta.

Asked if he would resign if he failed to fill all backlog vacancies by the deadline, Mr. Krishnappa said he was ready to resign if that would help SCs and STs. When it was pointed out that Mr. Krishnappa's predecessor, Kagodu Thimmappa, had said he would resign if he could not fill backlog vacancies, the latter clarified that he had said: "Why should we remain (in office) if we cannot fill up backlog posts?"

K.N. Subba Reddy (BJP) was informed by the minister, in reply to a question, that the possibility of increasing the stipend for law graduates among SCs and STs enrolled as advocates, from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 2,000, would be examined by the Government next year, keeping in view the availability of resources.

Mr. Krishnappa said the stipend had been increased from Rs. 750 to Rs. 1,000 in July 1997, and there was no proposal to increase it further. Stipend was being given to 428 people from SCs and STs in the State, including 53 in Bangalore. It was for the Cabinet to consider the suggestion for extending the stipend scheme for law graduates from backward classes who were enrolled as advocates, he added.
