A special train hauled by a steam locomotive will be operated from Chennai Central to Tiruvellore and back on August 4. For this a steam locomotive is being refurbished at the Perambur Loco Works here. The engine, brought from Mumbai, had the distinction of hauling major express and mail trains of the Indian Railways. The Chief Public Relations Officer, S. Sridhar, said similar heritage run was organised from Mumbai to Thane in April. Now it is being organised in the Southern Railway. Steam engines had been replaced by diesel and power locomotives. But the administration has a handful of steam locomotives, which are kept in rail museums as exhibits. The Union Minister of State for Railways, A.K. Moorthi, will flag off the special train on Sunday. Apart from the Minister and officials, the administration is planning to accommodate inmates of orphanages and homes for mentally retarded in the train. Film stars have been invited to participate in the run to provide entertainment to the children.
