Aparna upsets Permana

MANCHESTER AUG. 1. Aparna Popat upset the top-seeded Lenny Permana of Australia 8-7, 7-4, 7-1 to move into the pre-quarterfinals of the women's section in the Commonwealth Games badminton at the Bolton arena. It was a fine start for Aparna, who had got a bye in the first round, like her opponent.

She will meet Amrita Sawaram of Mauritius in the next round.

Pullella Gopi Chand kept himself on course with a 7-2, 7-4, 7-5 victory over Bruce Topping of Northern Ireland in the third round.

In men's doubles, the sixth-seeded Diju Valiyaveetil and Sanave Thomas made the quarterfinals and will take on the third-seeded Nathan Robertson and Anthony Clark of England.
