Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Deputy Prime Minister, L.K.Advani's reply to the question whether it was proper for the Defence Minister to meet a POTA detainee is unconvincing and evasive. It appears that he is mentally in agreement with the Opposition's question. Political leaders may visit a POTA detainee but not Union Cabinet Ministers. If Mr. Advani comes to Chennai, will he also visit Vaiko? By confabulating with a POTA detainee and discussing with him ways to come out legally, by a Union Minister reduces POTA to a farce. Mr. Fernandes is known as a sympathiser of LTTE and so his visit to the prison is all the more controversial. It is strange that the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa, is silent on this issue. Perhaps she wants to expose the Union Government on its double standards when it comes to implementing its own laws.
