Sir, The Kumarakom boat tragedy in which 29 passengers died and many were hospitalised (July 28) was shocking. This is not the first time that a boat tragedy has occurred. There have been commissions appointed to go into the reasons for them and reports have been submitted recommending safety measures. But nothing effective seems to have been done in the matter. From reports it is seen that overloading, the unfit boat and negligence of the Government and people concerned are the main reasons behind the tragedy. It is natural that people who have to go to certain places urgently will try to get into any conveyance unmindful of the consequences. We have heard of several such tragedies where boats have capsized due to overloading. It is regrettable that neither the Central nor the State Government or boat builders have thought of a design of boats to avert such mishaps.
