Monsoon may revive in four days

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JULY. 16. Even as several parts of the country continued to reel under the long dry spell, India Meteorological Department today expressed optimism that the monsoon, which had remained inactive for about a fortnight now, could revive in the next three to four days. However, this optimism comes with a qualification.

Observing that the ''things are brightening up,'' senior IMD officials said the outlook had become positive since yesterday as a low pressure area has developed at the head of the Bay of Bengal and there was lot of clouds over the Bay. The system was expected to strengthen and move inlands in the next few days bringing the much-needed rains in its wake. Already, under its influence there have been some light showers in the coastal areas.

The sense of optimism is, however, not totally unqualified. It is tinged with a note of caution. For, they conceded that much would depend upon how far the system strengthened before it moved inland. ''It is quite possible that the system could move in before it gets adequately strengthened. In that case, all the build up could get frittered away.''
