Standing panel discusses engineering works

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD July 16. Engineering works costing Rs. 9.78 crores came up for revalidation before the Standing Committee of the MCH on Tuesday. The members discussed the works and decided to further scrutinise the proposals in the next meeting.

These works were accorded administrative sanction last year, but could not be grounded due to various reasons like land disputes, court cases and elections to the civic body. Some of them pertained to laying of a CC road in Asadbaba Nagar and Kishenbagh, construction of a super speciality hospital at Darulshifa, construction of three blocks of office complexes at Darulshifa under the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project, construction of retaining wall on either side of Balkapur nala, development of a skating rink complex in Indira Park etc.

The Standing Committee, which met under the chairmanship of M. Madhu, gave approval for construction of a Central Transport Office at Kavadiguda under the Mega City Project at a cost of Rs. 3.84 lakhs. It also approved sanction of Rs. 50 lakhs as first instalment of the MCH to become a shareholder in the Hyderabad International Trade Exposition Centre. The Government, it is said, had permitted the Corporation to contribute Rs. 1 crore towards its share for the HITEX.

Some members were believed to have raised the issue of grant of sports material worth Rs. 50,000 to each corporator. The question of identifying a landfill site to serve as a garbage dumping ground was also discussed.

The Standing Committee further confirmed its earlier resolution, seeking enhancement of the honorarium being paid to corporators on par with the Deputy Mayor and that of the Standing Committee Chairperson on par with the Mayor. However, the BJP corporator and ward committee chairperson, Venkat Reddy, was stated to have raised a point of order questioning how the Standing Committee could pass such a resolution, especially when three of its members were absent.
