School of Excellence in IIIT

HYDERABAD July 16. The State Government has decided to set up a School of Excellence in the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Gachibowli, which will develop and also act as a nodal agency for channelising all e-governance solutions. An MoU to this effect would be signed soon, and the State Government would also make a contribution of Rs.2.5 crores to set up the school, said the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, while speaking at the first convocation of IIIT here on Tuesday. The IIIT, set up in 1998, already had corporate schools started by Oracle, Satyam, Keane, Cisco and IBM. Announcing the State Government's intention, Mr. Naidu said the school could also market e-governance solutions outside Andhra Pradesh or even in other countries. Mr. Naidu said five years of efforts to make Hyderabad a global centre of excellence in IT were bearing fruit with the IIIT getting recognised as a deemed university.

The Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, R. Chidambaram, in his convocation address, said the contribution of IT to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was considerable, but the full potential of IT was yet to be realised.

Indian software industry did well abroad also and entered IT Enabled Services and Bioinformatics. But to retain its leadership, the industry must move up the value chain and also capture high-end products and software, he said. It was also important for India to enter the hardware area, he said. The Chairman of the Governing Council, IIIT, Raj Reddy, the Director, IIIT, Rajeev Sangal, and the Director International, IIIT, Narendra Ahujaspoke. In all, 49 students received the Degree of Bachelor of Technology in Computer science and Engineering, and 16 the Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology.
