By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM July 16. The Health Department has constituted a panel to intensify preventive measures against Leptospirosis in the wake of an increase in the number of deaths due to the disease in the State.

This followed a meeting to review the treatment and preventive measures launched to counter the Leptospirosis threat. The Health Secretary, K. Ramamurthi, will chair the panel.

Leptospirosis, or `Rat Fever' in common parlance, had accounted for 69 deaths in 1999, 87 in 2000 and 119 deaths in 2001. The death toll up to May this year stood at 69.

The Director of Health Services, V. K. Rajan, has stressed the need for purchasing and distributing adequate testing kits at hospitals.

The Agriculture Department has sanctioned Rs. two lakhs to each district for undertaking rodent control programmes with the assistance of the Animal Husbandry and Health Departments and the local bodies.
