A rare phenomenon with incidence of one in about 50,000 deliveries, the conjoined babies were delivered of after an elective caesarean operation by doctors of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics department and the Paediatric department on July 12. An official release from the hospital said Indira Veerappan of Padi was admitted to the hospital with twin pregnancy. On ultrasound examination, she was found to have conjoined babies.The babies are united at the chest and the abdomen. They have two separate hearts but shared a liver, a kidney and have three legs.Doctors said absence of malformations, lack of bone union and presence of two separate hearts are most important indicators for good surgical outcome. They have been shifted to the Institute of Child Health for further surgical management.
