Tamil Nadu-Chennai

The Government had instructed the CMDA to process all regularisation files by December, but the High Court has issued an interim stay order to the CMDA to stop processing applications received in the present scheme. Last year, the CMDA had given an undertaking to the court that it would not process applications received in the third scheme. As a result, the agency has no option left but to process only those files received in the first two schemes (1999 and 2000). The CMDA's post-regularisation plans have suffered a temporary setback following the interim order. As the second phase of its demolition drive, the agency had planned to pull down illegal constructions that had not applied for regularisation, but the proposal has not taken off. ``Further action on the regularisation scheme can be decided only after the issue is taken up for hearing,'' a senior CMDA official said. The CMDA is moving court to vacate the injunction, officials said. ``We have been instructed to complete processing of the backlog files by July end,'' said an official dealing with the regularisation files. The CMDA has received more than 50,000 applications in the four schemes together, of which about 24,000 were received in the 2002 scheme.
