Waghela made GPCC chief

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 16. The former BJP Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shankersinh Waghela, was today appointed president of the State's Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) in place of Amarsinh Chaudhary, who has been made leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).

Though Mr. Waghela's name has been in circulation as a front-runner for the post of the PCC chief since Saturday when Mr. Chaudhary and the CLP leader, Naresh Rawal, tendered their resignations to allow a revamp of the State unit ahead of the Assembly elections, a formal announcement was made only this evening.

Mr. Chaudhary and Mr. Rawal had submitted their resignations on being asked by the party high command to do so. The former, however, was upset at having been divested of his charge and speculations were rife that he was joining hands with the Samajwadi Party.

It took a lot of persuasion to get Mr. Chaudhary to settle for the post of the CLP leader. While Mr. Waghela's appointment as the PCC president was a foregone conclusion by this morning, the announcement was delayed till Mr. Chaudhary came round.
