Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram

A resolution moved by the Mudavanmugal councillor, Rajasekharan Nair, at a meeting of the council said a number of schools in the city were threatened with disconnection after having run up arrears of over Rs.10,000. He said the Corporation was not in a position to pay the huge sum. The resolution appealed to the Government for urgent steps to prevent disconnection of water supply to the schools until a solution was worked out to tide over the crisis. Earlier, the Opposition UDF staged a walk out from the council meeting alleging discrimination in the constitution of working groups to oversee the implementation of projects under the Plan Campaign. As many as 15 working groups have been set up. As soon as the Mayor announced the allocation of members to various working groups, the UDF parliamentary party leader, K.Maheswaran Nair, protested saying that the groups were constituted without consulting the Opposition. Soon UDF councillors were on their feet alleging that they were assigned to relatively unimportant groups. The members trooped out of the hall to register their protest. The meeting approved the list of beneficiaries for various welfare and pension schemes.
