Idhayam V.R. Muthu, Rotary Club's Community Service Director initiated and promoted this project, which falls under the Community Service scheme. Rtn. J.P. Joe Villavarayar of Tuticorin presided over the function. Rtn. Dr. R. Ashokan and Rtn. A. Selvashanmugam distributed cash awards, certificates and mementos to the outstanding sports persons. The winners: Hockey: M. Saravanakumar (Sports Hostel of Excellence, Chennai), member of the victorious Indian team which won the Asian Sub-junior championship at Singapore; M. Sivasubramanian (KVS HSS), picked for T.N. sub-junior team. Basketball: G. Muthujehan (KVS HSS), represented T.N. in Sub-junior nationals; Saravana Rajan (Christian College, Chennai), represented T.N. in Youth nationals; S. Pari Mannavan (Idhayam Rajendran Residential School), represented T.N. in mini nationals; A. Ramachandran, R. Balaganapathy, V. Rajakumar (all from VHNSN, College), represented M.K. University team. P. Durgaram, B. Pravin Kumar, P. Senthilkumar, G. Asai Thambi, V. Sugumar, P. Hariharn, M. Mathana Sundaram, A. Rajamani, J. Jeyasuthan (all from VHNSN, College), represented College team in the MK University inter-Collegiate tournament. Volleyball: G. Amuthalakshmi (KGHSS), represented T.N. in the all-India Rural Sports meet at Bhopal. Football: P. Mohaaj (RVS HSS), selected to represent T.N. in the Rural Sports Meet. Ball badminton: P. Vijay Amirtharaj (Loyola College, Chennai), represented Madras University; P. Raja Kumaresan (KVSHSS), represented T.N. in the National Sub-junior Championship held at Orissa. Athletics: R. Muralikrishnan (KVSM HSS), won first place in Catch'em Young Sports meet at Nagercoil; R. Hepzi Boorha Saral (KGS), won bronze in 200m in Republic Day meet at Tirunelveli; P. Santhana Raja, D. Abash Devakumar, G. Premkumar, S. Prema Leela, Joseph Karthick Prem Chandran (VSVN Polytechnic), won medals in the State inter-polytechnic meet at Salem. Badminton: S. Sakthi Devi, S. Parvathi, M. Sasikala, J. Stella Suba Anila (VSVN, Polytechnic), members of the victorious polytechnic team which won the inter-polytechnic tournament at Salem; R. Vignesh (KVSHSS), won medals in the Republic Day meet at Tiruneveli. Swimming: R.S. Guhan (KVS MHSS), won medals in Catch'em Young Swimming at Thanjavaur; P. Karkuvel Ayyanar (KVSM HSS), won medals in MK University contests; C. Munniasamy (VHNSN), won medals in MK University contests. Weightlifting: P. Mareeswaran, S. Senthilvel (VHNSN College), won medals in MKU Championship. Powerlifting: S. Vishwasa Mary (VSVN, Polytechnic), won gold in T.N. Championship at Rajapalayam; G. Uma Devi (PSC School), A. Jeyasri (SVA School), E. Suriya Gandhi (KGH Secondary School), won medals in State Sub-junior championship. Chess: R. Antony (KCET), runner-up in Ties Tournament. Karate: R. Venkatesh (VHNSN College), A. Abinaya (PSC School), K. Arun Rajan, A.B.M. Abinash, L. Vignesh Anand Raja (KVS MHSS), participated in Karate meets and won medals. Yoga: G. Radhakrishnan (Yoga Instructor, Sri Ambal Ramasamy Young Centre), participated in International Yoga Olympic Competition held at Buenos Aires, Argentina; K. Indhira (SARYC), M. Aruna Rajeswari (PSC School), T. Subbulakshmi (KGHSS), M. Suresh (KVS HSS), J. Rajesh (SARYC), P. Vidya (KGHSS), N. Marikani, N. Padma Balaji, P. Raj Kamlesh (KVS HSS), represented Tamil Nadu in the 26th National Yoga Championship held at Ranchi; K. Kannan Prasad (KVS MHSS), won first place in State meet.
