Good response for Avadi Open

Chennai July 16. The inaugural Avadi FIDE-rated Open chess tournament starting in Chennai on Wednesday has received an enthusiastic response with the organisers confirming more than 170 entries.

The six-day event boasts of 50 FIDE rated players from most States in the country who will be vying for the 20 prizes. Prominent among those participating are former National `B' champion R. Balasubramaniam of ICF and M.B. Muralidharan of Kerala. The first prize is Rs.10,000 and the prize fund is Rs.40,000.

The Avadi Chess Academy is conducting a major event for the first time and it will be held under the auspices of the Thiruvallur District Chess Association. There are special prizes for age group participants.

There will be nine rounds in this tournament which will conclude on July 22. This is the first of five rating events the Tamil Nadu Chess Association has lined up for this season.

The next four are: Adyar Times rating tournament, Chennai from July 23-29; Mappillai Vinayagar Open, Madurai from July 31 to August 7; Kanadukathan FIDE-rating Open at Chettinad, Sivagangai District from August 9 to14; and the SPIC rated Open at Tuticorin from September 22 to 30. — Our Chess Correspondent
