Bandobust scheme for CM's Ramnad visit

By P.S. Suresh Kumar

Ramanathapuram July 16. Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's visit to Ramanathapuram on Thursday.

According to police sources, the perception of threat faced from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and a few fundamental outfits is very high. The local police have chalked out an extensive bandobust scheme for the Chief Minister.

All Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in the Mandapam transit camp were checked as a precautionary measure by security agencies. Fishermen in coastal areas have also been asked not to venture into the sea for two days for preventing infiltration by Sri Lankan Tamil militants in the guise of Indian fishermen.

In addition to the existing 11 coastal checkposts, five more have been formed and observation posts set up.

Three watch tower have been set up near the helipad and function venue. The Navy along with Coast Guard has stepped up vigil over the Adam's bridge to prevent illicit ferrying of boats as well as intruders from Sri Lanka.

The Chief Minister's programme details are being kept a secret for security reasons.

She will reach Ramanthapuram around 11.30 a.m. by a chopper. Only a handful of visitors will be allowed to receive her at the helipad.

Our Salem Special Correspondent reports:

The Salem city is being spruced up for the proposed visit of the Chief Minister, which is tentatively scheduled on July 22. A massive clean-up drive has been launched on all major thoroughfares, particularly on those roads leading to the Kamalapuram airport and the Government Arts College.

The official machinery has been geared up to make the city live up to its status as ``green, clean Salem'' for which it has obtained the ``Green award'' through the Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, from the Chief Minister recently.
