Singhal wants councils for temple property

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry July 16. Ashok Singhal, international working president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, today said State Governments should constitute autonomous councils to look after the property of the temples.

Referring to the purpose of his visit to Pondicherry, Mr. Singhal said he had discussions with members of the Board of Trustees of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram here regarding programmes to propagate the messages of Aurobindo and the Mother during the celebration of the 125th birth anniversary of the Mother of the Ashram falling on February 21 next.

He brushed aside the criticism of saffronisation of education and said using `saffron', which was a symbol of sacrifice, in a derogatory sense was unacceptable. Regarding the plea for trifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir, he said this would put an end to the discrimination and discrepancy in the progress and development of that State. He welcomed the view of the Kanchi Acharya that political parties should keep off the Ram Janmabhoomi issue. The Annadhanam scheme being implemented by the Tamil Nadu Government was a good one.

S Vedantam, international vice-president of the VHP, R.V. S. Manian, governing council member and State organising secretary for Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, accompanied Mr. Singhal.
