Sir, Reference ``Discrimination at work'' (July 11) by Andre Beteille: The policy of positive discrimination in favour of Dalits and women was evolved as a social welfare measure by our leaders to uplift these long suppressed segments of our society. In due course, this policy became a political tool in the hands of both policy-makers and beneficiaries. Any retraction would result in serious repercussions and prove to be politically costly and socially repulsive. Positive discrimination at the level of capacity building and skill formation and fixing up a minimum acceptable standard for entry into work opportunities would be a better proposition to avoid the apprehended performance gaps. This will have a positive impact, i.e. no loss in the performance of manpower. M.P. Boraian, Gandhigram, T.N.
