By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE July 4. The decennial celebrations of the midday meal scheme organised by the Sri Veervinayaka Janaseva Trust was inaugurated by the Chairman and Managing Director of Karnataka Bank, Ananthakrishna, here today.

He said it was sad that even 55 years after Independence the Government had not been able to eliminate poverty.

Mr. Ananthakrishna appreciated the trust for offering free midday meals to children of underprivileged sections studying in the four schools in the region.

Many such efforts were needed to promote education amongst the poor, he added.

The Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, A.K. Monnappa, was the chief guest.

The Managing Partner of Kanachur Wood Industries, A.K. Monu, presided over the function.

Students of the schools in the area were provided uniforms and those who secured good marks in the VII and X standard examinations were given cash prizes.
