Mr. Vaiko, who is now in Chicago and is planning to return to Chennai by July 11, said the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, was keen on putting her political opponents in jail. He said he had not instigated violence or encouraged violent activities in Tamil Nadu but had been consistently supporting the cause of the Tamils of whom the LTTE was the unquestioned leader. Ms. Jayalalithaa, he said, was indirectly helping the Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, who was bent on sabotaging the peace initiative with the Tigers. Later, participating in a discussion on the issue on a private TV news channel, Mr. Vaiko said he was ready to face any consequences when he returned to India. ``I am prepared to face any eventuality,'' he told `Star News' from Chicago. Stating that he would be the last person to embarrass the Vajpayee Government in any manner, the MDMK leader said the ISI-backed terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir could not be equated with the LTTE and their ``freedom struggle''.
