Choolai building demolished

CHENNAI JULY 4. The CMDA's demolition of a building at Choolai on Wednesday was again a case of an illegal construction having come up because the owners were encouraged by the regularisation scheme to violate the city's building rules.

It was the 10th demolition carried out by the CMDA in the last three weeks and the first after the original deadline for the regularisation scheme expired on June 30.

The four-storey building on Salai Street had approval only for a one-storey building but the owners had constructed additional floors expecting to regularise it under the CMDA scheme. ``When they give us the option of regularising, why should we not have additional structures,'' asked the owner's husband, R.Nainmal.

The owners had applied for regularisation last month, but the CMDA rejected it and hand-delivered the refusal letter to them on Tuesday evening.
